Investigate / Cross-Examine

Phoenix using Investigate / Cross-Examine in Ultimate.
User Phoenix Wright
Universe Ace Attorney

Investigate / Cross-Examine (調査する / 詰問する, lit. Investigate / Interrogate) is Phoenix Wright's down special move.

Overview

Phoenix looks around at the ground, before reaching down and grabbing a piece of evidence off the floor. Any evidence found in this manner is stored in the Court Record, which appears above him while using the move, and is also visible above his percentage at all times. Only 3 pieces of evidence can be held at any given time. The evidence Phoenix gathers is randomly generated, and falls into one of two categories. Good evidence, which lights up the slot it occupies and is used for transitioning to Turnabout Mode, and bad evidence that darkens the slot it occupies and serves no use other than to waste a slot and necessitate the use of his side special Discard Evidence. Phoenix also has a rare chance of finding either food or items as well, but they are not stored in the Court Record and are used immediately.

In Turnabout Mode, Phoenix instead poses with his hands on his hips confidently. If he's hit in this state, he will counter by shouting "Objection!" at the opponent.

Good Evidence Bad Evidence Items

Origin

A screenshot of an investigation segment from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Investigation is one of two main gameplay segments of the Ace Attorney series. When not in court, the player is tasked with going around the crime scene and other related areas to talk to witnesses, collect evidence, and generally build their case to prepare for the next court date. Phoenix's down special is mostly based on the "Examine" option during investigations, in which the player can click various areas around the screen to take a closer look at them, and sometimes find evidence that is then stashed in the Court Record for use in court.

Cross-examining is the primary method of gameplay during courtroom segments. The player listens to a witness' testimony, and then is given a chance to cross-examine them, pressing their statements for more details, or presenting evidence that contradicts their testimony in an effort to prove that they are lying and often make them testify further.
